As the New York Times (28/02/2018) pointed out in its article entitled ‘Why Ipoh, Malaysia, Should Be on Your Travel Radar‘ Ipoh is fast emerging as a popular place to visit with hip, cool and modern restaurants, bars and hotels catering to a influx of new visitors.

Renewal in Ipoh

Which is good news for the inhabitants of Malaysia’s third city as this a major reversal of the city’s fortunes and its decline since the 1970s when its tin mining industry, which had been the area’s major source of wealth for the past 100 or so years, went into decline with a collapse in world tin prices.

Ipoh has a lot going for it. The city has a lot of historical buildings, especially its old town. The British colonialists left some great architecture, most notably the grand railway station, which is similar to the old railway station built in Kuala Lumpur, and the city’s town hall. A more modern additional to the Old Town are street murals, a series of which were created by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic as well later creation by local artists. These wall murals are dotted around the old town.
