About Travel to Padang Besar

Padang Besar is a town with two parts. One half of Padang Besar is in Malaysia, and has around 10,000 permanent residents. The other half of the town is Thailand, and is slightly larger with approximately 15,000 inhabitants. Confusingly, there is a Padang Besar Railway in both the Thai and the Malaysian halves of Padang Besar.

Padang Besar Railway Station

The Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia is much larger than the Padang Besar Railway Station in Thailand, with a sizeable inside area containing a waiting area, toilets, ticket counters and a fairly large restaurant. The restaurant is well used as there are few other facilities near the station.

The other notable feature of Malaysia’s Padang Besar Railway Station is that this station houses two sets of immigration desks on the ground floor inbetween the train platforms. The reason for this is that Padang Besar is the only interchange station with Thai railway services. Passengers travelling between Malaysia and Thailand can clear both sets if immigration controls as they either exit or board international trains at Padang Besar Railway Station.
