The caves were transformed into a Hindu place of worship in 1890 by wealthy immigrants from India. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu God of War, Lord Murugan. A 42.7 metre tall statue of Lord Murugan, covered in gold paint, is located near the entrance to temple in front of the 272 steps leading up to the Batu Caves.
The large staircase leads up to the largest of the caves known as both Temple Cave and Cathedral Cave. There are numerous shrines within this large cave. There is also a large opening in the roof of the cave through which you can see the trees above. In addition to this large cave there are two smaller caves near the base of the hill, both containing shrines and paintings. Admission to the Batu Caves is free.
