About Travel to Penang


The cheapest way to travel from Butterworth Railway Station to Penang Island is to travel on the Rapid Ferry service. The ferry pier is accessible via the 1st floor of Penang Sentral Bus Station. It’s a short walk from Butterworth Railway Station to Penang Sentral Bus Station which is signposted. Rapid Ferry services to Penang operate from daily from 05:20 until the last ferry at 00:10. A one way ticket, which you need to buy as you enter the jetty on route to the ferry, costs 1.20 MYR for adults and 0.60 MYR for children. There is a minimal amount of seating in the car ferry, a small shop and toilets. Smoking is strictly forbidden. The journey, however, only takes from 15 to 20 minutes and most travellers stand near the rail on the deck to enjoy the excellent views. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Butterworth Railway Station to Penang Island which will cost you from 30 to 50 MYR depending upon your destination and your negotiation skills.

The arrival point on Penang Island for Rapid Ferry services from the mainland is George Town. The ferry port is on the seafront road in George Town. The old quarter of George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and most visitors to the island choose to base themselves here to visit the many local attractions and enjoy the nightlife, which is some of the best in Malaysia. Both Armenia Street and Chulia Street are within easy walking distance from the ferry terminal if you have a light bag and are reasonably fit. For travel beyond George Town you can take a local bus service departing from Penang Jetty Bus Terminal, which is the bus station that you come to just after you alight from the ferry from mainland.
