About Travel to Padang Besar


Padang Besar is a town which spans 2 countries, Malaysia and Thailand, and each half of the town has its own train station. The Padang Besar Railway Station in the Malaysian half of the town is the northern terminus for Malaysia’s West Coast Mainline, and the only connection point with Thailand’s railway network.

There are currently three Thai train services a day departing from Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia, two of which are local train services going only as far as Hat Yai, and one long distance train service terminating in Bangkok after passing through Surat Thani, Chumphon and Hua Hin on route.

Travel by road from Padang Besar to Thailand

You can also travel by road from Padang Besar Railway Station to Thailand. Taxi and motorbike taxi services to the border depart from in front of the main entrance to the railway station. It’s too far to walk to the border, and then it would still be a further long walk between the Malaysian and Thai immigration centres. Per person taxis charge about 20 MYR for the 10 minute journey to the border as far as the Thai immigration centre.

Once you pass through Thai immigration into Thailand you can then take a motorbike taxi or a taxi to the minivan station in Padang Besar. Minivan services from Padang Besar to Hat Yai depart frequently throughout the day and take 50 minutes to reach Hat Yai Bus Station.
