About Travel to Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru, located in the southern tip of the Malay peninsula, is Western Malaysia’s third largest city with a population of 800,000. It’s also an important border crossing point connecting Singapore to the mainland by both road and rail. What Johor Bahru is not, however, is a popular tourist destination in it’s own right.

Facilities for Overnight Visitors

Johor Bahru has plenty of facilities for visitors arriving late in the evening and needing to stay overnight before continuing their travels. There are around 80 hotels, hostels, and guesthouses in the city centre available to book online. The city’s top hotel, the Sheraton Johor Bahru, typically charges from RM500 a night. Lower cost rooms are generally available from RM70 a night. Mid-range hotels typically charge from RM200 to RM300 a night.

There are also lots of restaurants in Johor Bahru. Most of the world’s major cuisines are available including Malay, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, and French. It’s not difficult to find good food in Johor Bahru. There are, however, only a relatively small number of bars in the city. Popular bars in the city include Mad160, MacGregor’s, and The Bierhaus German Pub.

Tourist Attractions in Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru’s only major tourist attraction, Legoland Malaysia, is located 23 km by road to the south east of JB Sentral Station. Bus company Causeway Link operates frequent services from JB Sentral Station direct to Legoland Malaysia.

Legoland Malaysia is the only Legoland theme park in South East Asia and it attracts around 2 million visitors a year. The park has over 70 rides and attractions, as well as places to buy food and drink. It’s one of the best theme parks in the region.

The most popular visitor attraction in Johor Bahru city itself is the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque. Other places to visit include Johor Bahru Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery, Johor Bahru Art Gallery, and Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum. The Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Palace Museum is, unfortunately, still being renovated.

Travel to Singapore

There are several different ways to travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. You can travel by road on either of two causeways linking the mainland with Singapore either by bus or by taxi.

There is also a rail link, the Shuttle Tebrau, linking JB Sentral Station in Johor Bahru to Woodlands Train Checkpoint in Singapore. The journey takes 5 minutes and costs RM5 per person, with frequent services throughout the day:
