Prior to that Ipoh had enjoy a century of rapid economic growth driven by tin mining in the surrounding hills. The old part of the city, by the train station, features lots of historic buildings dating back to the period when Ipoh was under the control of the British Empire and these buildings are one of the main tourist attractions in Ipoh. Visitors can follow the Ipoh Heritage Trail around the city centre to view 27 of these buildings, and at the same time see the famous wall murals created in 2014 by Ernest Zacharevic.

In the hills around Ipoh there are lots of interesting caves to explore. Some of the caves have been turned into temples by Chinese Buddhists.
