Travel from Kuala Lumpur


From Kuala Lumpur you have two options for onward train travel from Kuala Lumpur: travel West on the branch line to Port Klang or travel Southwards on Malaysia’s West Coast line. The main reason foreign visitors go to Port Klang is that this where ferries to Dumai on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. The journey by ferry to Dumai in Sumatra takes around 3 hours and costs 110 MYR. From Dumai its an 8 or 9 hour journey by bus to Bukittinggi, which is a popular hill town in Sumatra’s Minangkabau highlands.

Alternatively take the main West Coast Railway Line South from Kuala Lumpur to Gemas. Gemas is the last stop on the West Coast Railway Line. Gemas is not a popular tourist destination, but nearby Malacca is. To travel to the historic coastal town of Malacca, formerly a major trading port during colonial times, take a bus or taxi from Gemas to Malacca. The journey by road in taxi takes just over an hour. To get from Gemas to Malacca by public bus, you need to take a bus from Gemas to the town of Segamat and from there get a bus to Malacca. From Gemas you also have the option of changing trains to travel from Gemas to Johor Bharu on Malaysia’s East Coast Railway Line. The journey by train from Gemas to Johor Bharu is scheduled to take 4 hours 10 minutes. From Johor Bharu Sentral you take a shuttle train to Singapore. The shuttle service from Johor Bharu Sentral Station to Woodlands Train Checkpoint in Singapore takes just 5 minutes.
