About Travel to Padang Besar

Padang Besar is at the northern end of Malaysia’s West Coast Railway Line, very close to the border with Thailand. Padang Besar is also currently the only interchange station between the Malaysian and Thai railways networks. When the full timetable is operating, three Thai train services a day depart from Padang Besar Railway Station:

  • 09:55: Train #948 to Hat Yai
  • 16:40: Train #950 to Hat Yai
  • 18:00: Train #46 to Bangkok via Hat Yai, Surat Thani, Chumphon and Hua Hin.

Tickets for Train #948 and Train #950 can only be purchased at Padang Besar Railway Station on the day of travel. Tickets for Train #46 can also be purchased in advance and we recommend booking in advance if you want to secure a sleeper berth for the long journey north to Bangkok, which is scheduled to take just over 17 hours.
