About Travel to Padang Besar


Padang Besar is a medium sized town split in two by the border between Thailand and Malaysia. Padang Besar has a small range of hotels, shops and restaurants, but no attractions that would make it a tourist destination in its own. People travel to Padang Besar to make the border crossing between the two countries and for duty free shopping at large warehouse style shops in the area between the two sets of immigration posts.

From Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia the easiest way to cross the border is by train. There are normally 3 Thai train services a day from Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia to Thailand. The first 2 of those trains, departing at 09:55 and 16:40 Malaysian time, are local train services which travel as far as Hat Yai in about 55 minutes. At 18:00 there is also a single long distance train service which is scheduled to terminate in Bangkok at 12:05 the next day. Before the departure of trains from Padang Besar Railway Station to Thailand, Malaysian and Thai immigration posts open within the train station building allowing passengers to complete exit and entry processes before boarding the train.

Not all trains travelling north to Padang Besar coincide with the departure of trains onward to Thailand. Services on the train line from Padang Besar are also sometimes suspended for a variety of different reasons. The alternative to travelling by train from Padang Besar Railway Station to Thailand is to take a local taxi to the border, and then to continue by road to Hat Yai once you cross the border. Taxis to the border depart from the car park in front of the station building. The cost of travelling to the border is around 20 MYR and if you are travelling alone you can expect to share taxi with other travellers. Taxi services will take passengers as far the Thai immigration centre. From there you can take a local motorbike taxi for a short trip that costs around 40 THB to the minivan station in the Thai half of Padang Besar. Minivan services to Hat Yai depart frequently. The journey takes just 50 minutes.
