Tourism in Padang Besar

Padang Besar has a small range of hotels, shops and restaurants, but no attractions that would make it a tourist destination in its own. People travel to Padang Besar to make the border crossing between the two countries and for duty free shopping at large warehouse style shops in the area between the two sets of immigration posts.

Travel by Train to Thailand

From Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia the easiest way to cross the border is by train. There are normally 3 Thai train services a day from Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia to Thailand. The first 2 of those trains, departing at 11:15 and 16:40 Malaysian time, are local train services which travel as far as Hat Yai in about 45 minutes.

At 18:00 there is also a single long distance train service which is scheduled to terminate in Bangkok at 09:05 the next day. Before the departure of trains from Padang Besar Railway Station to Thailand, Malaysian and Thai immigration posts open within the train station building allowing passengers to complete exit and entry processes before boarding the train.

Travel by Road to Thailand

Not all trains travelling north to Padang Besar coincide with the departure of trains onward to Thailand.
