About Travel from Penang Island to Malacca


The first stage of the journey by train from Penang Island to Malacca, known locally as Melaka, is to travel to Butterworth Railway Station to board the train. You can take a taxi from Penang Island to Butterworth Railway Station, which will cost you around 30 to 45 MYR depending upon from where on the island the taxi journey commences. A much cheaper option, however, is to take the car ferry from George Town to the mainland, and from the arrival point of the ferry it’s a 5 minute walk to Butterworth Railway Station. Car ferries to the mainland depart from Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal on the beach front road in George Town. Ferry services run frequently from 05:40 until 22:00 every day, and less frequently until the last ferry at 00:40. The journey takes 20 minutes and costs 1.2 MYR for adults and 0.6 MYR for children.

By train the journey from Butterworth Railway Station to Pulau Sebang/Tampin Railway Station takes just over 6 hours. From Pulau Sebang/Tampin Railway Station you can travel onto Malacca either by taxi or by bus. Expect to pay around 70 MYR for the 38.9 km taxi journey from Pulau Sebang/Tampin Railway Station to Malacca city centre. A cheaper but slower option is to take a bus to Malacca. Bus services to Malacca stop at a bus shelter in front of the car park of the Mydin Pulau Sebang Hypermarket, which is a 5 minute walk from Pulau Sebang/Tampin Railway Station. The journey by bus takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and costs 5 MYR. The arrival point for bus services is Melaka Sentral Bus Station, which is 4 km from the historic city centre. You can get a local bus (bus number 17) into the Malacca City Centre although after a long day of travelling you may want to take a taxi, which is a lot quicker and costs around 15 MYR.
