Butterworth Railway Station is the closest train station to Penang Island. From Butterworth Railway Station passengers can travel to George Town on the car ferry or to other destinations in Penang via two bridges connecting the island to the mainland. Passengers can also connect with bus services at the nearby Butterworth Bus Terminal.
Butterworth Train Station
Butterworth Railway Station is located on Malaysia’s West Coast Railway Line which runs South to Gemas via Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur. For travel from Butterworth to Singapore take a train to the end of the West Coast Railway Line to change trains for onward travel to Johor Bharu on Malaysia’s ‘Jungle Line’ which runs the length of peninsula Malaysia through the East Coast states. There is a shuttle service from Johor Bharu Sentral Station to Woodlands Train Checkpoint in Singapore.

Butterworth Train Station is also connected to the KTM Komuter Line which runs from Butterworth to Padang Besar on the border with Thailand, where passengers can transfer to Thailand Railway Services for travel to Bangkok via Hat Yai, Surat Thani (for travel to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan), Chumphon (for travel to Koh Tao) and the popular beach resort town of Hua Hin.

Facilities at Butterworth Station
Butterworth Railway Station is modern station with a small range of facilities.

Butterworth Train Station has an indoor waiting area, toilets and a small shop. The station has no restaurant or left luggage office.
Buying Tickets at the Station
There are two ticket counters on the 2nd Floor inside the station building.

There are separate ticket counters for KTM Komuter services which run north towards Padang Besar and ETS Train Services which run south towards Gemas (for travel to Singapore) via Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur. You need to go to the correct ticket counter for the type of train service you want to take.
Transport to Butterworth Train Station
Butterworth Railway Station is very close to Sultan Abdul Hamid Ferry Terminal which is the arrival point for ferry services from George Town in Penang Island. Ferry services to Butterworth depart from Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal on the seafront road in George Town centre near to the southern end of Chuila Street and the little India area. Ferry services from Penang to Butterworth operate from 05:40 to 00:40 every day. The journey takes 15 minutes and the adult fare is 1.20 MYR and the child fare is 0.60 MYR. During daylight hours there is a ferry to Butterworth every 20 minutes. On arrival at Sultan Abdul Hamid Ferry Terminal take the free shuttle bus service to Butterworth Bus Terminal which is a 1 minute walk from Butterworth Railway Station.

You can also travel by road from Penang to Butterworth via either of two bridges. Expect to pay around 30 MYR for the journey from George Town to Butterworth Train Station and 44 MYR for the journey from Batu Feringghi to the station. There are no fixed fares for taxi and they do not use their meters so agree the fare in advance with the taxi driver.
