About Travel to Johor Bahru

With over 800,000 permanent residents, Johor Bahru is the largest city in the southern part of peninsula Malaysia. Johor Bahru is also a border town through which overland travellers need to pass in order to travel between Malaysia and Singapore. The amount of cross border trade between small, but wealthy, Singapore, and large, but less developed, Malaysia is significant particularly in relation to food.

Tourism in Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru is slowly losing its reputation as a city with a high crime that’s slightly dangerous to visit, however, the city’s tourist attractions and tourism infrastructure are desperately in need of investment. For example, the hugely impressive Palace of the Sultan of Johor has been closed to visitors for many years now because of the need for refurbishment.

Johor Bahru State’s more successful tourist attractions are all located outside the city centre. The foremost of these is Legoland Malaysia which is located 23 km by road from Johor Bahru City. The new Danga Bay development, to the west of the city centre, features shops and restaurants, a theme park, and a small view, is a popular choice for locals and tourists.

Travel to Singapore

The majority of those travelling south to Johor Bahru will be on their way to Singapore, which is a major tourist destination and economic centre. There are three way to travel by public transport from Johor Bahru to Singapore:

• Bus: This is the cheapest way to travel. The journey takes some time (up to 3 hours) because of congestion on the causeway linking Malaysia and Singapore and queues at immigration going into Singapore. Fares range from RM2 to 4 depending on the service and route.
• Shuttle train: This is the fastest way to travel to Singapore. The journey takes 5 minutes and it’s normally much quicker to clear immigration than if you travel by road. Tickets cost RM5 one way.
• Taxi: This option costs RM300 to 400 depending on your end destination and negotiating skills. Travel by taxi takes about as long as travel by bus, and generally it’s only really worthwhile if you are transporting lots of bags, or for people with young children or limited mobility.
