About Travel to Padang Besar
Padang Besar is a town split into two halves by the international border with Thailand. The Malaysian side of the town has around 10,000 permanent residents and the Thai side of the town is slightly larger with 15,000 residents. Padang Besar in Malaysia has a small number of facilities for international visitors such as hotels and restaurants, but no popular tourist attractions. The main reason most visitors come to Padang Besar is either to cross between Thailand and Malaysia, or to visit the duty-free shops which are located inbetween the two border posts.

Padang Besar is considering by many travellers to be the most convenient border crossing between Malaysia and Thailand partly because Padang Besar is fairly close to Hat Yai, which is the regional capital, and partly because Padang Besar has the only interchange station between the Thai and Malaysian railway networks. There are two sets of passport controls (one for each country) inside Padang Besar Railway Station which only open when international services are either departing from, or arriving into, Padang Besar Railway Station.
There are three Thai train services a day from Padang Besar to Hat Yai, all of which take 55 minutes to complete the journey:
- Train 948: Departs 09:55 (08:55 Thailand time)
- Train 950: Departs 16:40 (15:40 Thailand time)
- Train 46: Departs 18:00 (17:00 Thailand time)
Train 46 continues it’s journey northward after a brief stop in Hat Yai and is scheduled to terminate the following day at 12:05 at Bangkok’s new main train terminal, Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.
Passengers who miss their connecting train to Thailand, or don’t wish to wait at the station for the next train, can travel by road from Padang Besar Railway to Thailand. Taxi and motorbike taxi services wait outside the front of the train station to take passengers as far as the Thailand Immigration Centre.
Once passengers have crossed into Thailand we recommend that they take a motorbike taxi the short distance to the minivan station in the Thai half of Padang Besar. Minivan services to Hat Yai depart frequently and take only 50 minutes to reach Hat Yai Bus Station, and from Hat Yai there are plenty of bus and minivan services to destinations across Southern Thailand as well as direct to Bangkok.
