Travel to Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru is a large city with over 800,000 permanent residents located right at the southern tip of West Malaysia. Johor Bahru City is not a major tourist destination in its own right, but plenty of people pass through the city every day travelling overland between Malaysia and Singapore. There are two road connections between Johor Bharu and Singapore, as well as a single rail link, with a further rail link due for completion in 2026.

Visitor Attractions in Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru City itself has few popular visitor attractions. The city’s main visitor attraction is the magnificent Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque. More recently smaller independent attractions have also been established, such as the Johor Bahru Art Gallery, but not yet in great enough numbers to revitalise the city’s tourism industry. Unfortunately, some of the city’s most iconic buildings, such as the Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Palace Museum, have suffered from a lack of investment and are no longer open to visitors.

The major tourist attraction in the area is Legoland Malaysia, which is located 23 km by road from JB Sentral Station. Legoland Malaysia is the only Legoland amusement park in South East Asia, and with over 40 rides and attractions it’s very popular. The other popular out of town development is Danga Bay, which is located a short distance to the west of the city centre and features a theme park, a zoo, shops, and restaurants.

Train to Singapore

The fastest way to travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore is to take the Shuttle Tebrau train service from JB Sentral Station to Woodlands Train Checkpoint in Singapore. This service operates every day from 05:00 to 22:45, and takes only 5 minutes to complete the journey. Tickets cost RM5 per person.

On arrival at Woodlands Train Checkpoint travellers can connect with Singapore’s efficient suburban train network at any of three nearby MRT stations. It takes at least 20 minutes to walk from Woodlands Train Checkpoint to any of these local transport stations, however, there are frequent connecting bus services you can take.
