About Travel to Padang Besar
Padang Besar is a town of two parts. The smaller half, with a population of around 10,000 permanent residents, is located in Malaysia. The other half of the town. with around 15,000 inhabitants, is in Thailand. Both parts of the town have amenities such as hotels and restaurants, but neither has any singnificant tourist attractions. Most travellers coming to Padang Besar do so to cross the border between Malaysia and Thailand.
Padang Besar Railway Station is the only interchange station between the Malaysian and Thai railway networks. Malaysian trains only travel as far north as Padang Besar where all remaining passengers must alight. Three Thai trains travel from Padang Besar into Thailand:
- Train 948: Departing 09:55 (08:55 Thailand time)
- Train 950: Departing 16:40 (15:40 Thailand time)
- Train 46: Departing 18:00 (17:00 Thailand time)
Trains 948 and 950 travel only as far as Hat Yai. Train 46 continues onto Bangkok where it is scheduled to arrive at 12:05 the following day. The journey by train to Hat Yai takes only 55 minutes. From Hat Yai passengers have choice of 4 long distance trains travelling north to Bangkok and a wide range of bus and minivan services to choose from departing from Hat Yai Bus Station.
Travel by train from Padang Besar to Thailand is a convenient option. Two set of immigration controls open inside Padang Besar to coincide with the arrival and departure of Thai train services allowing passengers to pass through passport control without leaving the train station bulidling. However, if your train arrives at Padang Besar and there is a going to be a long wait for the departure of a connecting Thai train service you can cross the border by road and continue your journey by minivan to Hat Yai.
Taxi services to the border depart from the carpark in front of the entrance to Padang Besar Railway Station. The taxi will take you as far as the Thailand immigation centre. From there once you have cleared Thailand’s immigration control you need to take a taxi or motorbike taxi to a minivan station in the Thai half of Padang Besar. Minivan services to Hat Yai depart very frequently and the journey takes 50 minutes. The arrival point for minivan services from Padang Besar to Hat Yai is Hat Yai Bus Station.
