Taiping is an interesting and lesser visited destination in Malaysia. Taiping was the first administrative centre of the British Empire in the Malay Peninsula and the city contains lots of places of historical interest to visit. Taiping is also a place of great natural beauty.

Taiping City

Taiping is a fairly large city with around 250,000 permanent residents, making it the second largest city in Perak State after the state capital Ipoh.

Taiping City has two unique features. The first is Taiping Lake Gardens which is a massive municipal public garden (covering over 640,000 square metres) which has 8 ponds and lakes. The second is the amount of rain in Taiping, which receives the greatest amount of rainfall anywhere in the Malay Peninsula. In the city centre many of the buildings have roofs which overhang the street in front forming covered pedestrian walkways.

History of Taiping

Taiping became the administrative centre of the British Empire in the Malay Peninsula in 1876. Taiping was chosen because it was economically very important at the time as a result of the rapidly expanding local tin mining industry. Large numbers of Chinese immigrants came to Taiping to mine the tin, and to get involved in the lucrative trade selling the tin ore, and it also attracted many European entrepreneurs.

The British colonial government invested heavily in Taiping introducing public facilities and policies similar to those in place in Britain. For example, the first modern style prison in the Malay peninsula was built in Taiping, it had the first modern style police force, the first public gardens and a number of other things. The local tourist authority has identified in total 33 things that are believed to have happened first in Taiping.

Maxwell Hill

Among the 33 firsts in Taiping is Maxwell Hill, which was the first colonial hill station in the Malay peninsula copying the success of the earlier hill station stations established in India, such as Shimla. Maxwell Hill, which is also known locally as Bukit Larut, is a 1,250 metre tall hill close to Taiping City.
