Travel from Butterworth Railway Station to Penang Island

There are two ways to travel by public transport from Butterworth Railway to Island: by taxi over one of the two bridges connecting Penang Island to the mainland, or by commuter ferry from Butterworth to George Town, which is the main city on the island.

Travel by Taxi to Penang Island

Travelling by taxi is much more expensive than travelling by commuter ferry. The journey on the commuter ferry is also a pleasurable experience because of the stunning views of the island’s coastline. Taking a taxi is the better option for travellers with mobility difficulties, or for those going to a different part of the island other than George Town.

Travel by Ferry to Penang Island

The commuter ferry service to Penang Island departs from a ferry pier accessible via the second level of Penang Sentral Bus Terminal, which is a 5 minute walk away from Butterworth Railway Station. Commuter ferry services run frequently from 06:30 until 23:00 every day. The journey takes 10 to 15 minutes and costs RM2 per adult and RM1 per child.

Commuter ferry services from Butterworth to Penang Island terminate at Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal, which is located on the seafront road in the centre of the old part of George Town.

For the best value for money consider searching in the Little India area of the city, which is located immediately to the north east of Chulia Street.
