Around half of the population of Penang State live on Penang Island. Penang’s State capital, George Town, is located on Penang Island as are the majority of the state’s major tourist attractions. When the term Penang is used by most foreign tourists they are normally referring to Penang Island. Penang Island does not, however, have its own railway station. Penang Island is connected to the mainland by two long road bridges, but a railway bridge has never been constructed. For travel by rail to Penang Island your best option is to alight at Butterworth Railway Station. The reason that this is the best option is because Butterworth Railway Station is close to the terminal for cheap car ferry services to George Town in Penang. The ferry terminal can be accessed from the 2nd level of Penang Sentral Bus Station, which is a 5 minute walk from Butterworth Railway Station.
