About Travel to Penang Island


Around half of the population of Penang State live on Penang Island. Penang’s State capital, George Town, is located on Penang Island as are the majority of the state’s major tourist attractions. When the term Penang is used by most foreign tourists they are normally referring to Penang Island. Penang Island does not, however, have its own railway station. Penang Island is connected to the mainland by two long road bridges, but a railway bridge has never been constructed. For travel by rail to Penang Island your best option is to alight at Butterworth Railway Station. The reason that this is the best option is because Butterworth Railway Station is close to the terminal for cheap car ferry services to George Town in Penang. The ferry terminal can be accessed from the 2nd level of Penang Sentral Bus Station, which is a 5 minute walk from Butterworth Railway Station.

RapidFerry services from Penang Sentral Bus Station to Penang Island depart frequently from 05:20 to 22:00 and then less frequently until 00:10. The fare is 1.20 MYR for adults and 0.6 MYR for children, which you pay on arrival in George Town. The ferry terminal in George Town is on the main coastal road in the historic part of George Town. If you have an idea of which direction you need to walk in, and not too much luggage, you can reach popular parts of George Town such as Chulia Street or Armenia Street on foot in under 15 minutes. Otherwise take a taxi or the free tourist bus from Penang Jetty Bus Terminal, which is right by where you exit from the car ferry. The tourist bus (the CAT service) departs from Terminal B and runs in a loop around the centre of George Town. Bus 101 to the popular Tanjung Bungah Beach also departs from Terminal B of Penang Jetty Bus Terminal.
