About Travel to Padang Besar


Padang Besar is a town divided into two parts by a border wall. The half of Padang Besar in Malaysia has around 10,000 permanent residents, and the part in Thailand is larger with around 15,000 permanent residents. Neither town has any well know tourist attractions, however, the duty-free shopping complexes between the two countries attracts large numbers of shoppers from both Thailand and Malaysia, prarticularly at the weekend. The border at Padang is also busy with a stready stream of Malaysian and Singaporean holiday makers going to, or coming from, short breaks in Hat Yai and the nearby coastal town of Songkhla.

When the full train timetable is operating it is possible to travel direct by train from Padang Besar Railway Station in Malaysia across the border into Thailand. A joint Thai and Malay customs and immigration post opens up before trains from Padang Besar to Thailand depart, which means once you clear both sets of immigration control you don’t need to show your passport again to enter Thailand. Shuttle train services from Padang Besar to Hat Yai depart at 09:55 and 16:40 (Malaysian time) and a long distance train from Padang Besar to Bangkok departs at 18:00 (17:00 Thai time).

You can also cross the border into Thailand from Padang Besar Railway Station by road. Taxis and motorbike taxis wait outside the entrance to the station for train passengers travelling onward to Thailand. Taxi services from Padang Besar Railway Station to the border with Thailand cost 10 to 20 MYR per person, and if you are travelling on your own you may well be directed to share a taxi with other travellers. The journey by road to the border takes around 5 minutes, and taxi services normally take passengers as far as the Thailand immigration centre. Once over the border into the Thai half of Padang Besar the easiest way to travel onward in Thailand is to take a taxi or motorbike taxi to the minivan station in Padang Besar, from where minivans to Hat Yai depart frequently throughout the day.
