About Travel to Padang Besar

Padang Besar is a town divided into two parts by a border wall.

Two Parts to the Town

The half of Padang Besar in Malaysia has around 10,000 permanent residents, and the part in Thailand is larger with around 15,000 permanent residents.

Neither town has any well know tourist attractions, however, the duty-free shopping complexes between the two countries attracts large numbers of shoppers from both Thailand and Malaysia, particularly at the weekend. The border at Padang is also busy with a steady stream of Malaysian and Singaporean holiday makers going to, or coming from, short breaks in Hat Yai and the nearby coastal town of Songkhla.
