About Travel to Padang Besar


Padang Besar is located on the border with Thailand and the main reason that most people to go there is to cross the border between the two countries.

Padang Besar Train Station is notable for being the only interchange station between the Malay and Thai railway networks. There are three trains a day from Padang Besar to Thailand. Two of those trains, one departing at 09:55 (Malaysian Time) and the other at 16:40 (Malaysian Time), are local train services travelling as far as Hat Yai. The third train, departing at 18:00 (Malaysian Time), travels all the way from Padang Besar to Bangkok. The journey to Bangkok is scheduled to take 18 hours 05 minutes.

Before each of these three train services departs two sets of immigration desks open on the ground floor of the train station. Before departing on a train from Padang Besar Train Station to Thailand passengers need to get a stamp out of Malaysia and complete immigration entry procedures for travel into Thailand at the immigration desks inside the station.

It’s also very easy to travel from Padang Besar Railway Station to Thailand by road. It’s too far to walk from Padang Besar Railway Station to the border with Thailand, however, taxis wait outside the front entrance to take passengers as far as the Thailand Immigration Centre, with is located at the Southern edge of the Thai half of Padang Besar town. The journey normally costs around 20 MYR per person and if you are travelling alone or with one other person you may end sharing a taxi with other travellers.

Once passengers travelling by road from Padang Besar in Malaysia cross over the border into Thailand the easiest way to travel onward in Thailand is to take a motorbike taxi for the short journey to the minivan station in the centre of the Thai half of Padang Besar town. By minivan the journey to Hat Yai takes 50 minutes. The arrival point for minivan services from Padang Besar to Hat Yai is Hat Yai Bus Station. From Hat Yai Bus Station there are freqeunt direct bus and minivan services to destination across Southern Thailand as well as to Bangkok.
