About Travel to Padang Besar
Padang Besar is located on the border with Thailand. In fact the town of Padang Besar is split into 2 parts by the border, and each half of the town has it’s own train station. Padang Besar is also the only interchange station between Malaysian train services and Thai train services.
About Trains from Padang Besar to Thailand
There are no scheduled train services which travel all the way from Malaysia to Thailand. In order to reach Thailand passengers need to change trains at Padang Besar.
Padang Besar Railway Station is at the top end of Malaysia’s West Coast Mainline and at the Southern end of Thailand’s Southern Railway Line. The West Coast Mainline in Malaysia is electrified, whereas diesel powered engine run on the Southern Railway Line in Thailand. The two railway networks aren’t yet fully interoperable.
Train Times from Padang Besar to Thailand
There are three trains a day from Padang Besar to Thailand:
- Train 948: Departing Padang Besar at 09:55 (08:55 Thailand time)
- Train 950: Departing Padang Besar at 16:40 (15:40 Thailand time)
- Train 46: Departing Padang Besar at 18:00 (17:00 Thailand time)
All three trains travel as far as Hat Yai in Thailand. The journey takes 55 minutes.
Train 46 continues on all the way to Bangkok, where it terminates at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 12:05 the following day.

Travel by Road to Thailand
From Padang Besar Railway Station you can also travel by road into Thailand, and onto Hat Yai by minivan. Bear in mind though it’s much too far to easily walk from Padang Besar Railway Station across the border and onto the bus station in Thailand’s Padang Besar.
Taxis wait outside the front entrance to Padang Besar Railway Station to take passengers across the border. The fare is around 20 MYR if you share a taxi.
Taxi services from Padang Besar Railway Station will take you as far the Thailand Immigration Centre. From there you need to take a motorbike taxi to the minivan station. Minivans from the Thai half of Padang Besar take around 50 minutes to reach Hat Yai, where they terminate at Hat Yai Bus Station.
