About Travel to Ipoh

Ipoh is a large and vibrant city with a population of around 650,000, an interesting history, and a strong local culture which is evident particularly in the city’s cuisine and its artwork. Ipoh is a popular destination for tourists as a consequence. In 2024 estimates suggest Ipoh received around 8 million domestic visitors and just under 400,000 foreign visitors.

Arrival By Train in Ipoh

Travelling by train to Ipoh is a much more convenient option than travelling by bus. Ipoh’s long distance bus station, the Terminal Amanjaya, is located 10 km by road to the north of Ipoh city centre. Ipoh Railway Station is a lot closer to the city centre. From the railway station it’s a 550 metre walk to the centre of Ipoh Old Town.

Ipoh Old Town

The main tourist attraction in Ipoh is its Old Town area located a short distance to the west of Ipoh Railway Station. The Old Town has lots of historic buildings and locations, a series of charming and very old fashioned shops and eateries, and a collection of very good street murals.

Most of the leisure visitors to Ipoh will spend at least a few hours walking around the Old Town taking photographs and trying the local food, some of which is unique to the city and of a high quality. To see the most interesting places in Ipoh we recommend following two walking routes. The first of these routes, the Ipoh Heritage Trail, is a signposted walking trail which passes by 27 notable buildings and locations. The second route to follow is much shorter and it takes visitors to all 8 of the wall murals created by Ernest Zacharevic in 2014. The wall murals all relate to the daily life, history and culture of the people of Ipoh.

Out of Town Attractions

All well as the Old Town, Ipoh also has a series of out-of-town attractions in the limestone hills that surround the city. The hills around Ipoh are important to the history of the city. The evidence of the earliest inhabitants of the area can be found in these hills, and the hills were also the source of the iron ore which made the city prosperous in the later 19th Century and early 20th Century.

A defining characteristic of the hills around Ipoh is their large limestone caves. Gua Tambun, which is a cave located about 9 km by road to the east of Ipoh Railway Station, contains a number of cave paintings depicting animals and humans which are believed to be over 3,000 years old. More recently, in the 20th Century, these ancient caves have begun to be inhabited again this time by Buddhist monks. There are more than 10 large Buddhist cave temples located close to the Ipoh City the most famous of which are Perak Tong, Ling Sen Tong, Sam Poh Tong, and Nam Thean Tong. These temples contain some very good statues and other artwork, along with some outdoor landscaping that has taken a tremendous amount of effort to create and maintain.
