About Travel to Chumphon

Other than needing to buy 2 separate train tickets, and having to change trains in Padang Besar, the journey by train from Kuala Lumpur to Chumphon is fairly easy to complete.

Train Travel from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar

By train, the journey from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar is scheduled to take from 4 hours 50 minutes to 5 hours 37 minutes depending upon which train you take. Long distance electric train services in West Malaysia are very comfortable, with several different seat types available on most trains including Premier Seat, Business Seat, and Second Class Seat.

Snacks and drinks are available on most long distance train services in West Malaysia, however, for a more substantial meal during the journey we recommend purchasing food at one of the many catering outlets in KL Sentral Station to take with you.

Immigration Procedures

When you arrive at Padang Besar Railway Station the first thing you need to do before you board the second train (from Padang Besar to Chumphon), is complete immigration procedures for exiting Malaysia and also for entering into Thailand.

Both Thailand and Malaysia have immigration desks located on the ground floor of the station. The desks open in advance of the departure of Train #46 to Thailand at 18:00 Malaysian time (17:00 in Thailand). Please bear in mind that it might take up to an hour to complete both sets of immigration procedures so, depending on the arrival times of your train from Kuala Lumpur, it may be sensible to start the process fairly soon after arriving at Padang Besar.

Train Travel from Padang Besar to Chumphon

Once you have completed both sets of immigration procedures then you can proceed to boarding Train #46, which will take you all the way to Chumphon. Train #46 is Thai train service and its a different type of service to any of the long distance services from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar.

Train #46 is a diesel powered sleeper train. There is only one seat type available, 2nd Class A/C Sleeper. Food will be available for purchase about 45 minutes to 1 hour after departure, when the train has passed through Hat Yai. The beds will typically start to be prepared about 18:30 to 19:00 onward. This means there will be time for passengers to get some sleep before the late night arrival of Train #46 in Chumphon.

Arrival in Chumphon

Train #46 is scheduled to arrive in Chumphon at 01:17. Public bus and ferry service will have stopped operating by that time, and travellers need to wait until at least 06:00 before they can continue their journey to Koh Tao or to other destinations in Chumphon Province by public bus.

Chumphon Railway Station is conveniently located right in the centre of Chumphon City. There are several hotels within easy walking distance of the train station. Two good options, both on the Krumluang Chumphon Road, are Salsa Hostel (550 metres from the train station) and Chumphon Euro Boutique Hotel (850 metres from the train station).

The Krumluang Chumphon Road is the major road leading south from the bottom end of the approach road to the train station. What this means is that in order to reach the Krumluang Chumphon Road you simply walk along the approach road to Chumphon Railway Station, cross over the road junction, and carry on straight in the same direction.

Travel to Koh Tao

The easiest way to travel from Chumphon Railway Station to Koh Tao is to take one of the joint bus and ferry services operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company. This twice daily service to Koh Tao departs from the car park in front of Chumphon Railway Station.
