About Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru is the capital city of West Malaysia’s southern most state, Johor, and the third largest city in the country with a city centre population of just under half a million permanent residents. Despite its size, however, Johor Bahru is not in itself a popular destination for tourists. Most visitors who come to the city do so on route to Singapore or to Legoland Malaysia, which is a popular amusement park 22 km by road to the west of Johor Bahru Sentral Station. From Johor Bahru there are three options for travel to Singapore: by shuttle train, by public bus and by taxi. All three options are available direct from JB Sentral Station.

Aside from the theme parks, which also include Danga World Petting Zoo and Danga World Theme Park, Johor Bahru also has two zoos, some museums, a few colonial era buildings, some museums, large mosques and royal palaces. Overall, in comparison to towns such as Ipoh and Penang little effort and investment has been put into making Johor Bahru’s interesting cultural heritage accessible to tourists. The prime example of this neglect being Johor Bahru’s main tourist attraction, the impressive Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Palace Museum which includes the Istana Besar (Grand Palace) of the Sultan of Johor, which has been closed since 2014 apparently for renovation and to date there has been no indication as to when it might reopen to visitors.
